Caroline Matilda of Great Britain and Ireland

Born Princess Caroline Matilda of Great Britain and Ireland, known as Queen Caroline Mathilde in Denmark.

Daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751) and his wife Augusta, Princess of Saxe-Gotha (1719-1772).

Married: Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen 8. Nov 1766 (div. 1772) Christian VII. King of Denmark and Norway (1749-1808), her first cousin, son of Frederik V. King of Denmark and Norway (1723-1766) and his first wife Princess Louisa of Great Britain and Ireland (1724-1751).


The father of her daughter Louise Augusta was most likely Caroline Matilda’s lover, the daughter of Johann Friedrich Struensee (1737-1772), King Chrisitan VII. German physician. The royal marriage was dissolved by divorce and Struensee executed in 1772.  

Died: Celle, Germany 10. May 1775 from scarlet fever
