Daughter of Prince George, Duke of York, later George VI. King of the United Kingdom (1895-1952) and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (1900-2002)

Born: Glamis Castle, Scotland 21. Aug 1930

Christened: Private Chapel, Buckingham Palace 30. Oct 1930

Godparents:

• The Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII., her paternal uncle)

• The Hon. David Bowes-Lyon (her maternal uncle)

• Princess Ingrid of Sweden (later Queen of Denmark)

• Princess Victoria of the United Kingdom (her paternal great-aunt)

• Lady Rose Leveson-Gower (later Countess Granville, her maternal aunt)

In 1953 she accepted an engagement offer by Group Captain Peter Townsend, Comptroller of her mother’s household but the government and the Church of England felt he was an unsuitable husband since he was divorced with two children and 16 years older than the Princess.  

Married: Westminster Abbey, London 6. May 1960 (div. 1978) Antony Armstrong-Jones, cr. Earl of Snowdon (1930), photographer, son of Ronald Armstrong-Jones (1899-1966) and his first wife Anne Messel (1902-1992), later Countess of Rosse.

Died: King Edward VII Hospital, London 9. Feb 2002 after suffering a stroke
