In 1953 she accepted an engagement offer by Group Captain Peter Townsend, Comptroller of her mother’s household but the government and the Church of England felt he was an unsuitable husband since he was divorced with two children and 16 years older than the Princess.  

Married: Westminster Abbey, London 6. May 1960 (div. 1978) Antony Armstrong-Jones, cr. Earl of Snowdon (1930), photographer, son of Ronald Armstrong-Jones (1899-1966) and his first wife Anne Messel (1902-1992), later Countess of Rosse.

Issue:

Died: King Edward VII Hospital, London 9. Feb 2002 after suffering a stroke

Buried: King George VI Memorial Chapel, Windsor Castle
