Philip of Greece and Denmark

Born Philippos, Prince of Greece and Denmark. His family went into exile in 1922. Renounced his titles in 1947 and adopted the name “Philip Mountbatten”, the surname of his maternal grandparents. He was granted the title Duke of Edinburgh on his marriage.

Son of Adreas, Prince of Greece and Denmark (1882-1944) and Alice, Princess of Battenberg (1885-1962)

Christened: St. George’s Church, Palaio Frourio (Old Fortress), Haddokkos, Greece a few days after his birth

Godparents: Olga, Queen of Greece (paternal grandmother); The Corfu community, represented by the Mayor of Corfu and the Chairman of the Corfu City Council

Married: Westminster Abbey, London 20. Nov 1947 Princess Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, later Queen Elizabeth II. of the United Kingdom (1926), daughter of George VI. King of the United Kingdom (1895-1952) and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (1900-2002)
