Ernst August I of Hanover

Born Prince Ernest Augustus of Great Britain and Ireland. Created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale in 1799. Succeeded to the kingdom of Hanover as Ernst August I in 1837. Since King George I the sovereigns of the United Kingdom had also been kings of Hanover. However, when Queen Victoria succeeded as monarch of the United Kingdom, salic law barred women from succession in Hanover and the kingdom fell to her uncle Ernest Augustus.
