Alfred of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Born Prince Alfred Ernest Albert of the United Kingdom. He was styled Duke of Edinburgh in 1893 and succeeded his paternal uncle as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1900. He was known as “Affie” to his family.

Married: Winter Palace, St. Petersburg 23. Jan 1874 Maria Alexandrovna, Grand Duchess of Russia (1853-1920), daughter Alexander II. Emperor of Russia  (1818-1881) and his wife Marie (Maria Alexandrovna), Princess of Hesse and by Rhine (1824-1880)


Died: Schloss Rosenau, Coburg 30. Jul 1900 from throat cancer. He was succeeded as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha by his nephew Prince Charles Edward, Prince of Albany.

Buried: Ducal Mausoleum, Glockenburg Cemetery, Coburg
