Son of Friedrich VIII Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1829-1880) by his wife Adelheid Prinzessin zu Hohnelohe-Langenburg (1835-1900).

Married: Coburg 2. Aug 1898 Dorothea, Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1881-1967), daughter of Philipp, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1921) by his wife Louise, Princess of Belgium (1858-1924).

Died: Primkenau (Przemków, Poland) 22. Feb 1921. He was succeeded as head of the house by his cousin Albert.
