Adolf Fredrik of Sweden

Born Adolph Friedrich, Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. As Adolf Fredrik King of Sweden since 1751 when King Fredrik I died without legitimate issue. Adolf Fredrik was next in line of succession through his mother, a great-granddaughter of Christina Magdalena of Sweden, herself the sister of Karl X. Gustav King of Sweden (1622-1660).

Son of Christian August, Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (1673-1726) and his wife Albertine Friederike, Princess of Baden-Durlach (1682-1755)

Born: Gottorp 14. May 1710

Married: Drottningholm 29. Aug 1744 Luise Ulrike, Princess of Prussia (1720-1782)

  • Gustav III. King of Sweden (1746-assassinated 1792) m. 1766 Sophie Magdalena, Princess of Denmark (1746-1813)
  • Karl XIII. King of Sweden (1748-1818) m. 1774 Hedwig Duchess of Oldenburg (1759-1818)
  • Fredrik Adolf, Duke of Ostergötland (1750-1803)
  • Sofia Albertina, Princess of Sweden (1753-1829), Abbess of Quedlinburg

Died: Stockholm 12. Apr 1777 from digestion problems after a lavish meal that included 14  dishes of his favourite dessert.
