Born Ernst Anton Carl Ludwig, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Succeded his father as Ernst III. Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld in 1806. After the rearrangement of the Ernestine duchies in 1825 he became Ernst I. Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Son of Franz, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld (1750-1806) by his second wife Auguste Gräfin Reuß zu Ebersdorf (1757-1831).

Coburg 23. Dec 1832 Marie, Duchess of Württemberg (1799-1860), his niece, daughter of Alexander, Duke of Würrtemberg (1771-1833) and Antoinette, Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld (1779-1824)
