Alice of the United Kingdom

Princess Alice Maud Mary of the United Kingdom.

She was named Alice in honor of Prime Minister Lord Melbourne, who had once remarked that it was his favourite name; Maud, the Anglo-Saxon form of Matilda, in honor of her godmother Sophia Matilda of Gloucester; and Mary for her great-aunt Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester, with whom she shared her birthday.

Daughter of Albert, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819-1861) and Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom (1819-1901)

Married: Osborne House 1. Jul 1862 Ludwig, Hereditary Prince of Hesse and by Rhine, who succeeded as Ludwig IV., Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine in 1877 (1837-1892), son of Karl, Prince of Hesse and by Rhine (1809-1877) and Elisabeth, Princess of Prussia (1815-1885).


Died: New Palace, Darmstadt, Hesse 14. Dec 1878 from diphtheria
