Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine

Ernst Ludwig Karl Albert Wilhelm, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, called “Ernie” by his family.

He succeded his father in 1892 and lost his throne in 1918 due to the revolution in Germany.

Son of Ludwig IV. Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine (1837-1892) and his wife Princess Alice of the United Kingdom (1843-1878).

1. Schloss Ehrenburg, Coburg 9. Apr 1894 (div. 1901) Victoria Melita, Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1876-1936), his first cousin, daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900) and his wife Maria Alexandrovna, Grand Duchess of Russia (1853-1920)

2. Darmstadt 2. Feb 1905 Eleonore, Prinzessin zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (1871-1937), daughter of Hermann, Fürst zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (1838-1899) and his wife Agnes, Gräfin zu Stollberg-Wernigerode (1842-1904)

Issue of first marriage:

• Elisabeth, Princess of Hesse and by Rhine (1895-1903)

• Stillborn son (25. May 1901)

Issue of second marriage:

• Georg Donatus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine (1906-1937) m. 1931 Cecilia, Princess of Greece and Denmark (1911-1937)

• Ludwig, Prince of Hesse and by Rhine (1908-1968) m. 1937 Hon. Margaret Geddes (1913-1997)

Died: Schloss Wolfsgarten near Darmstadt, Hesse 9. Oct 1937
